The Rockhampton Grammar School is looking for a hard-working and detail orientated individual to join our Cleaning Team.

Our cleaning team play a vital role in our School of ensuring all of our facilities are of a certain high standard and cleanliness.

This is a full-time, permanent position (38 hours per week) working Monday to Friday.

Hours for this position are 05:00am - 1:30pm. (One day per week the team is given an early finish of 11:00am).

Commencement for this role will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Key duties and responsibilities

The Rockhampton Grammar School was founded in 1881 and is an independent co-educational day and boarding school, educating and caring for students from Prep to Year 12, as well as the Early Learning Years. The School is the largest independent boarding school in Queensland and the second largest co-educational boarding school in Australia. It is a leading school in regional Queensland and one of the foremost schools in regional Australia. The Rockhampton Grammar School has achieved great success in the academic, cultural, sporting and vocational fields over the past 143 years. The School has a total enrolment of over 1,400 (Prep to Year 12) students who are exposed to our broad curriculum, giving effect to our commitment of Grow in Character and Scholarship.

POSITION TITLE:  Cleaner

DEPARTMENT:   Cleaning

CLASSIFICATIONFull-time, permanent

REPORTS TO:   Services Manager

BASIC FUNCTION:

The cleaning team as a whole is responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness throughout the School and off-site School properties. Each cleaner will be responsible for an area and will be expected to clean to the frequency and standard set out. At the discretion of the Business Manager or Services Manager cleaning staff will clean other areas as required.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The cleaner will work as part of a team performing a variety of regular and one-off cleaning tasks and duties as directed by the Services Manager.

You will take part in maintaining to high and consistent standards, the cleaning of designated area/s (both on and off site) of the School on a daily basis. You will:

    • Be responsible for cleaning certain parts of the School site/s as allocated by the Services Manager (this will vary from time to time);
    • Use cleaning materials as instructed by the Services Manager;
    • Operate cleaning machinery in cleaning soft and hard surfaces e.g. vacuum cleaners and polishers;
    • Take initiative to perform cleaning and tidying tasks that are not specifically contained within the position description but require attention as part of maintaining overall high standards;
    • Liaise with Services Manager and Facilities Manager and other members of staff as required to
    • ensure cleaning operates smoothly around both school events and outside School hire;
    • Report cleaning supplies requirements and stock levels to the Services Manager;
    • Ensure Health& Safety, quality and general procedure compliance;
    • Work as part of a team and support other members of the cleaning team to meet standards and school objectives;
    • All cleaners are required to contribute to major cleaning tasks during School holidays;
    • Carry out the following duties:
      • Vacuum or sweep cleaning hard and soft floors;
      • Spot cleaning of spillages;
      • Wiping furniture, desks, ledges, skirting, paintwork, doors and polishing door and window glass;
      • Remove marks from glass, doors, windows, walls;
      • Emptying and cleaning bins (including wheeliebins);
      • Clean toilets including sanitary fittings and surrounds, urinals, hand basins and sinks, baths, showers and drinking fountains;
      • Refill toilet dispensers in all cubicles;
      • Refill paper towels in each dispenser;
      • Wipe tiles;
      • Mopping and spray cleaning hard floor surfaces;
      • Wiping and polishing and straightening furniture;
      • Replenishing cleaning supplies in toiletsetc.;
      • Cleaning of external areas (high pressure hosing, blowing);
      • Cleaning of school signage, outdoor seating areas and handrails
      • Rubbish disposal
      • Cleaning of staff residences when required
      • Cleaning of school equipment and furniture as required
      • All defects/hazards must be immediately reported to the Services Manager;
      • Any other cleaning duties as required or directed by the Services Manager.

You will maintain Health and Safety procedures at all times. You will:

    • Ensure security of the building e.g. check windows and doors are closed/locked;
    • Report any faults to electrical cleaning equipment, do not use until fault is repaired;
    • Only use authorised cleaning materials, ensure the correct dilution rate as directed and used only for the purpose indicated;
    • Ensure all personal protective equipment (PPE) issued is worn at all times;
    • Display wet floor signs when cleaning floors.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES/KNOWLEDGE

  • Due to physical requirements of this position good health and fitness is essential;
  • Ability to carry out general cleaning duties as detailed in the position description;
  • Is punctual, reliable and trustworthy;
  • Ability to manage time effectively to complete tasks to a high level;
  • Ability to prioritise work;
  • Able to work with minimum supervision;
  • Ability to work both alone and within a team to achieve specified standards;
  • Ability to act on initiative, dealing with unexpected problems that arise;
  • Willingness to clean any area of the School as requested by the Supervisor;
  • Willingness to take personal responsibility for standard of work carried out;
  • To undertake any training relevant to your role;
  • Some knowledge of Health & Safety Regulations as they relate to the operation of cleaning equipment and the dilution of cleaning materials.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of undertaking general cleaning duties.

  • Maintain valid “Working With Children” documentation;
  • Undergo periodic National Criminal History Record checks;
  • Report to management any criminal charges or convictions you receive during the course of your employment that may indicate a possible risk to children and young people.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The successful applicant will be subject to a “Working with Children Check and Criminal Records Check” where applicable. The School undertakes several screening processes to ensure the appropriate protection of children and young people in its care. This includes reference checks, identity checks qualification check and professional registration checks.
